Chris,

I wrote a short note on cleaning gratings in Microscopy Today, Vol. 9 No.3, April 2001, p36.  I can't find it online there now; perhaps your library may have it.  The process is basically to cure PDMS (Dow Sylgard 184) on the grating and peel it off.  This seems equivalent to other submitters suggestions of replication tape.
