Topic: Materials Design and Biomechanics of Natural Armor
We can learn much from biological organisms that have evolved over millions
of years a veritable encyclopedia of environmentally-friendly engineering
designs for protection against specific predatory and environmental threats,
including; kinetic impacts, dynamic penetration, blast, heat and thermal
fluctuations, fire, and biochemical toxins. The goal of the proposed
research program is to create a comprehensive knowledge base of natural
armor design principles linked to their corresponding threats. The proposed
research approach will consider the entire multiscale armor system as a
whole within the context of the known environmental threats; including
nanostructural design and mechanical properties, multilayered structure, and
larger length scale biomechanical mobility. This research will involve
participation in four research subprojects; natural flexible armor, natural
transparent armor, natural armor for kinetic and thermal protection, and
natural armor for blast and toxin resistance. Model systems include such
unique materials as molluscs from deep sea hydrothermal vents, echinoderms,
beetles, pteropods, etc. Knowledge of the structure-property-function
relationships of these materials will enable pathways to improved
bioinspired human body armor, as well as provide clues to the evolutionary
origins of mineralized tissues. Experience with experimental aspects of
nanomechanics (e.g. instrumented nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy,
etc.) and computational modeling (finite element analysis) is desirable for
this position. The appropriate candidate will be expected to collaborate
with and mentor a team of graduate students.
