A postdoctoral position with potential opportunities for staff scientist position is open at the UCSF (University of California, San Francisco) Center for Bioengineering and Tissue Regeneration in the Departments of Surgery and Bioengineering and Therapeutics. We are looking for a highly qualified candidate with a doctoral degree in biophysics, bioengineering or materiel sciences, and with experience in atomic force microscopy (AFM). The project will focus on measuring extracellular and cellular stiffness of human and murine normal, cancerous and metastatic breast cells. Opportunities also exist to collaborate for studies exploring force regulation of human embryonic stem cells. Proven experience in AFM of cells is a prerequisite. Experience in cellular biology and tissue culture and animal work or stem cells would be a plus.
Our group is exploring the molecular mechanisms whereby the extracellular matrix and its cellular receptors, including integrins, syndecans and discoidin receptors, modulate embryonic and adult cell fate and tumor metastasis. The extracellular matrix, which is the noncellular component of the microenvironment, influences cell growth, survival, migration and tissue-specific differentiation. Specifically, we are investigating how mechanical and topological properties of the extracellular matrix, which are related to its composition and organization, regulate the function of matrix receptors to alter cell behavior and stem cell fate. Our research program is broadly divided into two fields of inquiry. The first focuses on understanding how matrix composition and organization influence mammary tissue development, tumor progression and therapy, and the second aims to clarify the role of matrix force on embryonic and adult stem cell fate.
