Hi Ramsey,
When you switch from imaging to ramp mode the probe goes to the center of the current scan area. This includes any imaging offsets that you might have been using.
As you note, effects like thermal drift and piezo creep can cause some error in this position. Our closed-loop scanner for the Dimension 3100, the Hybrid XYZ head, minimizes this error.
