Applications are invited for a postdoc research position for a period of 2.5
years. The project will involve electrical measurements of the conductance
of single porphyrin molecular wires using a Omicron UHV system incorporating
variable temperature AFM-STM, UPS and XPS.
This is a collaborative project involving groups from the Universities of
Cardiff, Oxford and Liverpool. Conjugated porphyrin wires will be
synthesised at Oxford (HL Anderson) with a range of structures and terminal
groups for contacting to metal electrodes. Conductance measurements will be
performed under vacuum over a wide range of temperatures at Cardiff and in
solution at Liverpool (R Nichols). The detailed conductance data will
enable us to address crucial questions relating to the mechanisms of charge
transport, the role of metallic contacts and potential electrochemical
gating of current through the molecule. In addition to these fundamental
scientific questions, the project will begin to address technological
requirements for integration of long-range charge transfer for
inter-connects and active transistor behaviour in a single molecule.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr J E Macdonald, macdonald at cf.ac.uk.
